Winterizing Your Sealcoating Equipment

Winterizing Your Sealcoating Equipment

Step 1: Drain the Tank

At the end of the season, thoroughly drain the tank of any leftover sealant. Transfer any remaining sealer into clean 55-gallon drums or totes, ensuring the lids are tightly sealed. Storing leftover sealcoat properly throughout the winter ensures it can be reused in the spring, saving you money and reducing waste. Store it in a temperature-controlled area—sealcoating materials cannot be reused if they freeze.

Tip: Watch a tutorial video to learn how to empty your sealcoating tank effectively.

Step 2: Flush the Pumps and Hoses

Flush out all of the pumps and hoses with clean water. This will help remove any leftover sealer residue that could freeze inside the components, potentially causing damage. Regular flushing prevents blockages and ensures the longevity of your equipment.

Step 3: Open the Valves

After flushing the system, open the valves to allow any remaining liquid to evaporate. It’s a good practice to leave the valves open until the end of the season to ensure that no liquid stays trapped inside the system, which could lead to corrosion or freezing.

Step 4: Clean the Tank

Clean the inside of your sealcoating tank by scraping off any hardened sealer residue. Over time, sealer can build up on the walls of the tank, potentially clogging the components. Scraping off dried sealer when it becomes brittle will help prevent blockages when the system is used again.

Tip: Wait until the sealer has completely dried and become brittle to make removal easier.

Step 5: Pump Maintenance

Before storing your sealcoating equipment, it’s important to prepare the pump for the winter months. Remove any motor oil inside the pump and replace it with antifreeze or windshield wiper fluid to protect seals and prevent freezing. This step helps preserve the integrity of the pump, ensuring it functions correctly when you’re ready to use it again.

Step 6: Store the Spray Wand & Hose

Detach the spray wand hose assembly from the machine and carefully roll up the hose. Store it in a clean, dry place away from the elements. Proper storage of hoses and spray wands prevents wear and tear and ensures that your equipment stays in good working condition.

Final Thoughts

Proper winterization of your sealcoating equipment is crucial for maximizing its lifespan and ensuring it’s ready for the next busy season. By following these steps—draining the tank, flushing the system, and cleaning your components—you can save time and money, avoiding costly repairs or replacements when spring arrives. Be sure to consult your equipment’s user manual for additional winterizing guidelines.
