Maintenance for Your Sealcoating Equipment

When you invest in sealcoating equipment, such as tanks, sprayers, and other essential tools, it’s crucial to select products that are durable and efficient. However, the longevity and performance of your equipment don't solely depend on its quality at purchase. Regular maintenance is key to getting the most out of your equipment. Many contractors follow a maintenance program, with some tracking every detail and others performing it more casually. Regardless, it’s important to establish a routine for daily, weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance to keep your sealcoating equipment in top shape. Here’s a comprehensive guide to maintaining your sealcoating equipment.

Routine Maintenance

Daily maintenance includes checking your equipment's fluid levels, draining any water from your air compressor, and monitoring tire pressure. On a weekly basis, inspect the oil levels and air breathers. Depending on use, you may need to clean or replace these parts. While it's advisable to clean or replace the air breathers monthly, weekly checks are still essential.

Additionally, check your hoses regularly for any wear and tear. If you notice any worn spots or degraded areas, replace the hoses or cut off the damaged sections to prevent potential ruptures. When winding up hoses, inspect them carefully to ensure that no parts are down to the threads. Another important tip is to avoid letting your sealcoating machine sit idle for extended periods. Without regular mixing of the materials, they can dry and harden, which may cause clogs or damage when the equipment is used again.

To be fully prepared for emergencies, keep spare parts and a rebuild kit on hand. These kits are easy to transport to and from job sites and can save time during repairs.

Winterization and Annual Maintenance

Winterizing your sealcoating equipment is a crucial part of maintenance, especially if your equipment is not stored in a climate-controlled facility. The process involves rinsing out your tank and pump with water, then running a fluid with a low freezing point through the system—windshield wiper fluid works well, as does antifreeze. After running the fluid through, let it sit for a few minutes, open all valves, and dry-fire the system to clear out any excess fluid. This process will leave antifreeze or windshield wiper fluid (instead of water) in the low points of the system, protecting it from freezing and preventing costly damage to your pump and filters.

Winter is also a good time for annual maintenance checks. Since you're likely not as busy during the off-season, you can perform more in-depth maintenance tasks. Check your axles, brakes, and wheel bearings. Change the hydraulic oil and filter, and inspect the diaphragm pump's balls and seats. While working on other maintenance, take the time to clean the inside of your tank. On colder days, you can remove brittle coal tar sealer by chipping it away, and if sealant levels are low, wash the tank out with water.
