Essential Tips for Sealcoating in Hot Weather

When temperatures rise into the 90s, special care is needed to ensure proper asphalt sealer application. In hot weather, the temperature of the asphalt can soar to 150°F, causing the water in the sealer to evaporate rapidly. If the curing process is affected, the sealer may stay tacky and result in unwanted tracking.

To prevent curing issues in extreme heat, you can either fog the asphalt or slightly add water to the sealer mixture. Fogging involves spraying a light mist of water over the asphalt (without creating puddles), which cools the surface and allows for proper curing. If you choose to add water to the mix, make sure it doesn't exceed 5%. While fogging is the preferred method, adding a small amount of water is also effective.

Sealcoating manufacturers typically base their mix designs on average temperatures, but in extreme conditions, applicators must make adjustments. Being able to adapt to varying weather conditions is crucial throughout the sealcoating season.
