Calling the Right Driveway Contractor
When your driveway needs work, calling the right type of contractor can save you a lot of time and hassle. Not all contractors do the same type of work, and understanding the differences can help you find the right expert for the job. There are three main types of driveway contractors: Paving, Repair, and Sealcoating.
Paving Contractors
Paving contractors typically handle full driveway resurfacing or removal and replacement. They are also capable of excavating and installing a new gravel base if needed. If your driveway has widespread issues that affect the entire surface, it may be time to call a Paving Contractor for a complete overhaul.
Repair Contractors
Repair contractors specialize in fixing specific problem areas of your driveway, such as potholes, alligatored cracks, or areas that have settled unevenly. These repairs are typically more cost-effective than replacing an entire driveway, especially if less than 20% of the surface has issues. If you have a few bad areas that can’t be fixed with crack filling alone, a Repair Contractor is a good choice.
Sealcoating Contractors
Sealcoating contractors focus on maintaining and protecting your driveway by filling cracks, patching small potholes, and applying a layer of sealer (either coal tar or asphalt emulsion). If your driveway only has minor cracks and you want to keep it protected, calling a Sealcoating Contractor every couple of years can extend the life of your driveway.
Recap:
- Paving Contractor: Call if the majority of your driveway is in poor condition and needs resurfacing or replacement.
- Repair Contractor: Call if you have specific problem areas (like cracks, potholes, or settling) that need attention.
- Sealcoating Contractor: Call if your driveway only needs crack filling and a fresh coat of sealer.
When calling for an estimate, be sure to explain your driveway's issues clearly. The contractor can then assess your situation and determine if you’re contacting the right type of service. Most reputable contractors will also refer you to a specialist if needed.
